June 4th, 2005 Meeting Essie

Before I receive my chemo, I have blood work done and an appointment with Dr. N’s physician’s assistant, Essie.  This is to make certain that I am healthy enough to receive that day’s treatment.

There is a routine to these appointments.  First, my vitals are taken and I am weighed (hmmm.  I seem to have gained a few pounds.)  Then, I’m given a sheet of paper with a list of symptoms on them.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I am to report my experience with these symptoms.  Nausea?  Thanks to Emend, 0!  Pain?  No, I haven’t really been experiencing any pain.  Just from the Neulasta.  I’ll give it a 2.  No tingling in my fingers or toes.  No hot flashes.  That about does it.

Essie came in with the results from my blood work.  My hemoglobin is low, which means I will need a red blood cell booster.  She is going to have Dr. N order a shot of Aranesp.  This will help to combat anemia.  My liver levels are slightly elevated, but are fine enough to continue treatment.  She does a quick examination of my body and asks about my activity level.  I’m informed that I am more active than she is (I doubt that.)  Finally, I’m given the green light to go to the hospital and have round three.
