July 1st, 2005 Dad Flies In For A Visit

My father still works back in Michigan, but whenever he gets some time off, he plans to fly out to AZ to visit me.  He hasn’t seen me completely bald yet and is looking forward to getting an eyeful of my new ‘do.  He’s probably more excited to see my hair than I am to show it off.  He actually has more hair than I do right now, which–believe me–I never thought would be possible.

Clint EastwoodHaving dad around brings a whole new element.  He’s a conservative version of John Wayne mixed with the Bad Ass attitude of Clint Eastwood, but less flamboyant.  While he’s here, I won’t have to worry about taking care of the dogs.  He has assigned himself to that job.  In fact, every time I speak with him over the phone, he talks about how he can’t wait to see Autumn and Farley and how much he loves them.  I guess since I didn’t give my parents grandchildren, they have to take what they can get.

We pick dad up from the airport and he is happy as can be and all smiles.  He compliments me on my new ‘look’ and I turn the car towards home.

As we near home, I suddenly remember a conversation that Michael and I had after I told him that my dad would be flying in for a visit.  Michael said, “You know Karen, having your dad stay with us will be like an episode of ‘All in the Family’.  Your dad is Archie Bunker, and I’m Meathead.”  Which I guess would make me Sally Struther’s character.  I’m certainly gaining enough weight to fill the part.
